The DOE’s Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) played host to partners and stakeholders in the European-funded EROCIPS Project at a Seminar held on the 19th October 2006 at Crawfordburn Country Park, County Down, North Ireland. The aim of the day was to disseminate the outputs from the project by EHS who, as a partner in EROCIPS, have been working with organizations from the rest of the UK as well as France, Spain and Portugal.
Representatives from Coastal District Councils, Port and Harbour Authorities, Pollution Response Companies and Statutory and Regulatory bodies, as well as organizations with an interest in the coastal or marine environment attended. They had a chance to see the work EHS has carried out to date under EROCIPS and to raise questions and concerns on the subject of pollution arising from Shipping and how it can best be planned for and responded to.
Dr Roy Ramsay EHS Director of Environmental Protection stated at the opening of the seminar at Crawfordsburn Country Park ‘The shoreline response to pollution from shipping accidents represents one of the greatest resource and management challenges likely to be faced by governments and other organizations involved in spatial planning for the sustainable use of coastal assets.’
