EROCIPS Project Final International Conference 6th & 7th September 2007

Old Harry Rocks

The EROCIPS Project Final Conference was held at the Lifeboat College in Poole, UK on the 6th & 7th September 2007. The free event gave participants the opportunity to learn about the methodologies, tools and guidelines developed over the last three years of the EU-funded EROCIPS Project direct from Project Partners.

Project Future

October 2007 and Beyond...

As the EROCIPS Project comes to a close Partners are working to draw up a framework for a future project to further strenghten the shoreline response to pollution from shipping. The outline objectives of this proposal include:

  • Strenghtening existing prevention, response and mitigation capacity to oil, HNS and inert pollution
  • Creating a sustainable network of experts on responding to oil and HNS incidents in the Atlantic Area
  • Supporting this network through data exchange and accessible management tools
  • Incorporation of EROCIPS outputs into current strategic response plans
  • Improving awereness and training of potential responders and stakeholder involvement
  • Encouraging collaboration between neighbouring countries through facilitating joint cross boarder training and exercises
  • Improving mitigation capacity by assesing current claims and compensation mechanisms as well as ecological damage asessment systems.

Current Partner CETMAR is leading the proposal development process and it is expected that a formal Project proposal will be submitted to the Secretariat in the spring 2008.

Project Management News update December 2007

October 2007 marked the end of the 3 year EROCIPS Project. The Project Partners were proud to present the tools and progress developed through EROCIPS at our final conference in Poole in September 2007. It was a very encouraging conference, with wide ranging support for the outputs and recognition of their potential to strengthen the response to coastal pollution. There was also discussion about how best to develop and build on the EROCIPS outputs in the future so watch this space!

The delivery of the Project outputs snowballed over the last months of the Project, culminating in the production of the EROCIPS Final Outputs CD, available as above. Our Project final image - PDF icon Newsletter October 2007 (1.94MB - pdf help) also lists the activities undertaken by our partners over the last quarter.

As with the end of any Project, the EROCIPS Project Management Team has now also moved on to other responsibilities. Mel and Heli would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated with the EROCIPS Project and to wish everyone all the best for the future.
